Born in Toledo, Ohio, Kevin J. Hayes spent his twenties living the life of a bike bum, but in the late eighties he entered graduate school at the University of Delaware, graduating with his PhD in English in 1991. Obtaining a professorship at a frontier normal college, he spent his professional career as a teacher of teachers. In 2015, he retired and, with his wife Sooki, moved home to Toledo, where he spends his time reading, writing, and riding his bicycle. His previous books include "The Road to Monticello" and "George Washington: A Life in Books," for which he received the George Washington Prize.
